The triumphs and travils of the little kingdom of Camelot

I wish people had been more critical of my writing in my previous school years. The way my writing is received at this publication, I have to wonder if I ever was as good a writer as people told me I was. I’m not cutting it, and instead of feeling more driven, I feel more weary with each story assignment and each round of edits. I’m beginning to wonder if I’ve made a horrible mistake.

Trust me, this first semester is pub lab is ALWAYS like that. It’s very different from community college and being in a class, especially since SF State has a rigorous program. Fortunately, this is just a transition phase. This is the stage where everything you knew suddenly becomes everything that is real. The best thing to do is look back through edits sometimes and think about why they were given. Don’t just correct, ponder and question. Take criticism to heart, but don’t let it wear you out. Remember it. Let it seep in slowly, then move past it and try to keep that note for the future. My entire first semester on pub lab, I had NO IDEA how much I grew until I looked at the progression of my stories. That really warms your heart.

Lastly, if you are unsure why your edits were given to you or why what you’re being told makes sense, ask. Ask Hunter. Or Scott. Or Kelly. Or Rachele. Really, Rachele is a wonderful resource. She always gives great answers to your questions, so don’t feel bad if you have to pop by and ask her how to improve a story.

But really, the best advice I can give is to watch your stories grow. Look back on what you used to do and be proud of what you’re doing now. Journalism is a finicky craft, but it will love you and nurture you all the same. Good luck.

Best,
Megan
